Release Dates & Announcements
In 2020 a Violet Evergarden movie premiered. It is sufficient to say that the fan base was in an uproar about this new release. The recent release of a film left everybody with a whole host of questions.
Does this mean we are getting another season? If there is another season, what will it be about? How will the story play out?
Well, with the popularity, and potential profitability as a result it is very likely that there will be a second season quite soon. Kyoto Animation, the production company, might even renew the series for another season as soon as 2022.
But, there is not actually an official release date at the moment. In light of the ratings, popularity, reviews, and profitability the movie and first season brought in. There is really no reason why there will not be a Violet Evergarden Season 2.

What Do We Know About Violet Evergarden?
Let us start at the beginning. Violet Evergarden is the story of an ex-soldier who after a great war finds herself emotionally detached. She starts a new job as an Auto Memory Doll which will enable her to talk to people around the country that have been through things similar or worse than her.
This anime is touching and thought-provoking. If you have seen it you probably cried at several points or even burst out laughing when some of the more innocent and funny moments cropped up.
The main point of the anime is for Violet to discover the true meaning of her mentor and guardian, Major Gilbert’s last words. What did he mean when he said ‘I Love you”?
What About The Source Material For Violet Evergarden?
This anime was based on a Japanese Light Novel series which was written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase. The light novel was released in 2015 and the first episode from the series was released on the 11th of January 2018.
It was directed by Taichi Ishidateand the screenplay was written by Reiko Yoshida. The whole series came to an end on the 5th of April 2018 and has a total of 13 episodes. It was not too long later in 2020 when the latest movie of the same name was released. It had been delayed by the repercussions of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The first season of the anime series followed the story up until the second volume. There are four volumes.
Below you will find a list of the Light Novel Series volumes:
- Volume 1 – The original release date was on the 25th of December 2015
- Volume 2 – The original release date was on the 5th of December 2016
- Volume 3: Gaiden – The original release date was on the 23rd of March 2016
- Volume 4: Ever After – The original release date was on the 26th of March 2020
But the episodes of the anime do not follow the source material perfectly. There are definitely differences between the two.
In season 1 one Violet Evergarden chapters 6,7,10 and 11 from volumes one and two have been adapted into the anime. The remaining chapters have been changed or partially changed.
This basically means that if there were to be a second season for this anime it would largely be based on the 3rd and 4th columns of the light novel.
We highly recommend that you check out the light novel, there are quite large differences between the anime and source material. Some information that the novel offers may offer you a different perspective. But both the anime and the light novel are astounding by themselves.

What Could The Plot Be For Season 2?
The most likely course of action will be to follow our heroine Violet as she learns new emotions and slowly regains part of her that was lost.
But, one of the most anticipated subjects that absolutely has to be explored is the whereabouts of Major Gilbert. Al we can do is hope that the director decided to be magnanimous and give us more on this particular topic.
If you have already seen the movie you will likely have learned more about Major Gilbert. But, for those of us that have watched the anime series alone are still holding out that there will be another season to unravel the mystery.
If the second season uses the 3rd and 4th volume as its source material, we are almost guaranteed to get more information on Major Gilbert, which is exactly what the fans want.
On the other hand, there have been speculations about Major Gilbert remaining lost so that the story can focus more on Violet as her character develops over the course of the first and second seasons.
But that does not seem like the right choice unless we are due a nasty and tragic end. Violet has decided to continue living so that she can one day find Major Gilbert. Even in the light novel, Violet comes to terms with her feelings toward Major Gilbert, and he even starts to understand his own toward her.
The biggest question is: Will Violet regain herself with the complete loss of finding Major Gilbert alive? Or will Major Gilbert return, giving Violet the chance to confess her feelings?
Even in the last episode of season one, we saw Violet smiling at an unseen person in the doorway. A lot of the fans assume that this person was actually Major Gilbert.
There are a ton of different ways they could tell the story of Violet, but it is not up to us to decide how the story goes. All we can do is wait patiently as the production company and directors, hopefully, create the second season of this anime.

Violet Evergarden
We cannot have another season of Violet Evergarden without our main character Violet Evergarden. She is an amazing character who won the hearts of everyone that watched this series.
Her emotionless outlook in response to her time at war coupled with her innocence are just a few things that make her such a wonderful character. A second season starring Violet is almost certain and would bring about more development for this character.
Over the course of another season, we think that she would really start to grow, a more expressive and emotional character we can watch grow.
We know that Gilbert sent her to his most trusted relatives who ended up adopting her. But her life truly started when she became a young soldier with her lack of feeling. When she meets Gilbert she starts to learn that she could achieve quite a lot in her life.
Learning to read, write, and even getting a name are just a few of the things he changed for her. But, after the war, she is left scarred for life. Violet ends up losing both of her arms.
There is so much to unpack with this character, and we have just scratched the surface. But, in another season we could see a more assertive Violet who does not take orders anymore, and this is something we think will be explored further in the second season of Violet Evergarden.
Gilbert Bougainvillea
Major Gilbert is the character everyone is most excited to see in season 2 of Violet Evergarden. He is a huge reason most people are so eager.
Major Gilbert Bougainvillea is following in the footsteps of his oldest brother Dietfried who is a captain in the navy. He is a quiet man who feels deep remorse for the use of a fourteen-year-old child as a weapon.
Over the course of season one we see Gilbert mostly in flashbacks, this is because on the current timeline he is actually missing. This is why the fans of Violet Evergarden are so excited to see more of him. In the second season, we are likely to see Gilbert in a new light.
For example a point of view from him about his time with Violet during the war. Or perhaps why he fell in love with a fourteen-year-old girl?
Regardless it is a given that we will see more of this character if a second season is made.
Cattleya Baudelaire
This character brings glamour to the Violet Evergarden anime. But this gorgeous woman is much more than meets the eye and is certainly keeping secrets from us. She is a successful Auto Memory Doll of the CH and is also friends with Benedict and Claudia.
This character is often quite flirtatious with the men around her and this makes it hard to know what she is truly feeling. Despite this, we are all eager to see her and Benedict develop their relationship or at least see how everything pans out in her love life.
Benedict Blue
Benedict left all of us shocked at the end of the final episode when he aimed for the second bomb on the train. A lot of people think of him as the best character in the series, while we do not agree with this statement it is clear to see why Benedict Blue is so loved among the fans.
He is a good-natured man despite the ‘bad boy’ impressions he gave off initially. On top of that Benedict is a very skilled person, there are several scenes in season one that are packed with action that make you wonder how he was trained.
Ann Magnolia
We saw Ann in one of the most emotional episodes of the whole season and in the epilogue. In the movie, there were rumors about her character that are very different from the epilogue and we are all very interested to see what they will do with her in season 2 of Violet Evergarden.
Claudia Hodgins
Everyone who has seen this anime appreciates Claudia, he is a big reason that Violet fought to live when she was young. This red-haired man was once a Lieutenant Colonel and is a good friend of Gilbert. It was Claudia that took Violet in as his adopted daughter when Gilbert requested it.
He is a lovable and emotional character who we all love dearly. He was a fatherly figure for Violet and even started to see her as his own daughter as he got to know her.
This sentiment is reiterated when we see was worried about Violet because she was in a war zone. This is just one scene where he portrays this deep care for his beloved Violet.
We are all looking forward to Claudia growing into a more rich and prominent character in the second season.
Dietfried Bougainvillea
This character was the true reason that Violet entered Gilbert’s life. He was actually depicted as having a lot of anger and frustration toward Violet and the fact that his brother went missing just gave him more reason.
But as the season went on we saw more development in this character, and we are excited about much more on that front.
Leon Stephanotis
Leon was a good friend to Violet and even made her feel strong emotions. But, we all remember the little promise that Leon and Violet made, to meet again beneath the stars.
Is it too much to ask to see this promise realized? He is actually a strong romantic interest and potential rival of Gilbert, and we all would love to see that play out in season 2.
Iris Cannary
The number one Doll at the CH is a character we are all eager to see more of. She is an intriguing character. Her story of unrequited love is really beautifully portrayed quite beautifully.
This left all of us feeling bad for this woman and keen to see her getting the happiness she deserved.
Luculia Marlborough
Luculia and Violet became friends when they entered the Auto Doll Training School. She has a painful past and one we are all eager to see more of in the next season.
Erica Browne
Erica is a calm character. She also is in love with Benedict, but to her knowledge her feelings are unrequited. She was the first person to understand Violet and how she felt despite other people’s confusion.
How Have People Reacted To A Second Season Of Violet Evergarden?
At the time of writing, it has been two years since the first season of Violet Evergarden was released. Despite this, many of the fans have not given up hope and there has not been a tangible calm from them.
Ever since the first season finished airing, there has been great anticipation for a second season. Violet Evergarden has been wildly popular and successful as far as anime goes.

What Are The Profit Margins For Violet Evergarden?
It is not incorrect to say that this franchise has made some serious money. For example, when the movie was released, soon after Kyoto Animation made an announcement that the profit they made went well above 1.28 billion yen on the 12th of October.
On top of that, the film reached rank 6 at the Japanese box office in its open week alone. This same film continued to earn and made over 831 million yen.
If that were not enough this movie also went on to win a series of awards from Crunchy Roll, Kyoto Animation, and several from the Tokyo Anime Awards.
Then we have the Light Novel series. Overall Violet Evergarden has four volumes and all of them made a significant profit in Japan. Each volume earned over 8.7k copies, each one was sold for $100. You can imagine that they made a pretty penny on that alone. But that’s not all.
This franchise also sold many DVDs and Blu-rays for Violet Evergarden. There were thousands of copies sold and on top of that, this anime made it onto the top charts for a week.
Violet Evergarden was released on DVD/Blu-ray on the 8th of April in 2021, once again, this release date was a result of delays that occurred because of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Now, at the movie’s box office, the 2020 Violet Evergarden movie made a total of 39 million US dollars. This includes international, domestic, and collection sales. The first movie which was released in 2019 brought in a total of 11 million US dollars. Not as high a profit but still quite substantial.
It is safe to say that the Violet Evergarden anime franchise has brought in a lot of money, definitely, enough to cover the production costs and potentially enough to make a decent profit. So, with such a large profit to be made with this anime, there is little reason why there should not be another season.
What Else Affects The Possibility Of A Second Season?
There are of course several things that could impact the likelihood of a second season for Violet Evergarden. From the ending of the series to the remaining source material.
So, let us discuss some factors we have not yet considered.
Controversies
Violet Evergarden has not really gotten mixed up in any large controversies. But, there have been some questions from the LGBT community. We are not really sure why this was a point of contention for some, but it is noteworthy.
Another thing some fans are a little iffy about is the potential idea of Gilbert being a pedophile. He was in love with a minor and this is not something that is agreed with. But because the series is based in the early 1900s during World War I.
It is common knowledge that young girls of this age were often married off to much older men. So, by the day’s standards, it was really not an issue. That being said, it is a subject that does not sit well with us.
The End of Season 1
As anyone who has seen the series will know, there were several magical moments that really left a lot of room for a continuation of Violet Evergarden’s story. For example, when Violet is at the train station and meets Gilbert’s mother.
But, on top of that, there is the whole idea of the journey our heroine has gone on to understand her unknown feelings. The feelings of love she has for Gilbert, the feelings of loss when he disappears, and of course, missing a loved one.
At the end of the season, she arrives at the house, and we see her smile and blush, this leaves us wondering if it was Gilbert that greeted her.
There are so many questions left unanswered, and it truly seems like the production company was paving the way for another season for this amazing anime.
Final Thoughts
Overall, we can say that a season 2 for Violet Evergarden will certainly be well received. The franchise has been very successful and even released a movie not too long ago.
So, if the production studio decided to make another season and conclude the story for once and for all they will not have to worry about it being a success.
But, all we can do now is wait and watch as we pray that the production company will renew the franchise for a second season. So, keep an eye out and hopefully, we will get what we want.
