What Is Re: Zero About?

Before we dive in, let’s take a closer look at Re: Zero, an anime show adapted from Tappei Nagatsuki’s light novels. You can stream the Re: Zero series on Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and Funimation.

Re: Zero is one of the most popular Isekai anime shows around. The Isekai sub-genre is all about portal fantasy and features novels, manga, anime, movies, and video games.

Re: Zero started as a collection of Japanese novels by Tappei Nagatsuki and is about a hikikomori called Subaru Natsuki, who is transported to another world on the way back from a store.  

After being summoned to an alternative universe, Subaru is attacked. A girl with silver hair and a fairy cat save him, and they decide to cooperate to find something that was stolen from the girl, however, they are both mysteriously attacked and killed. 

Subaru realizes that he has gained the power “Returns by Death” which allows him to rewind time by dying. He sets out to rewind time and save his silver-haired friend from death. While doing so Subaru learns of an evil organization named Dividing Field in charge of controlling the different dimensions.

It turns out that his alternate dimension and this other world are connected through a door opened by the same person – Emilia. His journey takes him across many worlds and continues throughout the seasons of the show. 

The novel series was adapted into a manga series in 2014 and then an anime television series in 2016. Isekai anime has become increasingly popular in recent years, so Re: Zero has become a well-known franchise with lots of fans.
